SAINT SEVER of RUSTAN
It is in the green frame of the valley of Arros that St Sever de Rustan offers to the lovers of beautiful stones one of most moving architectural all the High Pyrenees

On the recent alluviums, the left bank of Arros, this site was frequented from the prehistory.

Being called primitively Albiciacum, it carries the name of a gallo-Roman domain derived of a name of Latin man " Albius " .Cette interpretation is confirmed by the discovery of vestiges of antique construction.

The place was at first, in Moyen-Age, the place of foundation of a convent near of which settled down Bastide in 1297. The classic art abbey member of the Reformed Church by St Victor of Marseille in 1087, was destroyed by the Protestants in 1573, restored by the monks in the XVII ° century, reconstructed luxuriously in the XVIII ° century and sold as very national after the revolution. The current plans date the XVIII-th century as notably the central pavilion of the abbey, covered " in Mansard ". The various architectural contributions in the course of the centuries form an ill-assorted set today. The reading of stones is a dive in the history of Bigorre. The abbey was built on plans of the Order Benedictine: a big facade was flanked by two wings, with in the centre a front body was decorated with a beautiful pediment. The first floor is drilled by high windows in full round arch and the set with or without floor covered with roofs in Mansard. The nef contains four spans. First, Romanic is bent in dome, the second and third redone in the XVIII°s are bent by a ceiling, and a fourth date of the XVI-th century. Saint-Sever's abbey church contains two sets stalls. They are separated by parcloses with armrests sculptured by heads of men and roguish, even satiric animals.

Saint-Sever-de-Rustan's convent is for Tarbes in the garden Massey. It was bought from the XIX-th century by the city of Tarbes to protect it from the ruin and the plunders.

The only stair preserved in the abbey dates the XVIII-th century, it is monumental. The peculiarity of Saint-Sever's abbey is to offer to the glance architecture more close to that of a palace than of one abbey. As Escaladieu, Saint-Sever's abbey became the national good and sold in 1789. She(it) was classified Ancient memorial in 1914.
